Baker Hughes: US rig count up 2 units to 455
The US drilling rig count increased by 2 units to reach 455 rigs working for the week ended May 21, according to Baker Hughes data. The count is up 137 units from the 318 rigs working this time a year ago.
The number of rigs drilling align="justify"> US oil-directed rigs were up 4 rigs from last week at 356 units. This time a year ago, 237 units were drilling for oil. Rigs targeting gas decreased 1 unit to 99, 20 more than were drilling for gas at this time a year ago.
Of the major oil and gas-producing states, Oklahoma saw the largest increase. A 4-rig increase brought the rig count to 26 for the week.
New Mexico gained 2 rigs to reach 26 running for the week.
Texas and Louisiana dropped a single rig each to hit 214 and 53 rigs for the week.
Nine states remained unchanged this week, namely Pennsylvania, 19; North Dakota, 16; West Virginia, 11; Colorado, 10; Ohio, 10; Utah, 9; California, 6; Wyoming, 4; and Alaska, 4.
Canada’s rig count decreased by 1 unit to 58 rigs drilling for the week. The count is 37 more than the 21 units drilling this week a year ago. At 25 units, Canada’s oil-directed rig count is unchanged from last week. The gas-directed rig count in Canada is down 1 unit to 33.
