DJ Argentina Wants More U.S. Investment in Vaca Muerta Shale Oil Deposit
Argentina's government said it hopes to attract more U.S. investment to its giant Vaca Muerta shale-oil deposit and signed a framework agreement Argentina wants to take advantage of U.S. companies' expertise in developing shale-oil resources, a subject Argentine President Mauricio Macri discussed earlier Friday in a meeting with President Donald Trump, Treasury Minister Nicolas Dujovne told reporters "They talked about the presence of U.S. companies already working in Vaca Muerta, using the experience accumulated after years of successful exploration in the U.S., and how we can continue to cooperate in this area," Mr. Dujovne said.
Vaca Muerta is the world's second-biggest shale-gas deposit and the fourth-biggest shale-oil deposit, and already supplies 15% of Argentina's natural gas, according to the Argentine government. The country hopes to use Vaca Muerta to boost economic growth and cut its use of imported fuels, which in 2017 represented almost 9% of imports by value.
The framework agreement with the U.S., signed by Mr. Dujovne and U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, commits the countries to cooperate to increase Argentina's use of cleaner energy sources, especially natural gas, and spur investment in the country's energy infrastructure, among other things.
