Unladen LNG tanker Golar Tundra heads toward Sabine Pass from Corpus Christi

The Golar Tundra LNG tanker has started to move toward Cheniere Energy's Sabine Pass LNG terminal after spending a week anchored at the company's new Corpus Christi LNG facility, according to S&P Global Platts trade flow software cFlow.

The cargo was showing unladen, indicating that it might actually load at the Sabine Pass facility instead of the new Corpus Christi export facility as had been expected.

The vessel, which is leased to US LNG developer Cheniere under a long-term charter agreement, had been at the Corpus Christi terminal since November 11. Company officials had earlier suggested that it may carry the first laden LNG cargo from Corpus Christi eastward sometime soon.

Cheniere began LNG production at Corpus Christi Last week, Cheniere CEO Jack Fusco told Platts that initial production from the facility was being used to cool down the terminal's storage tanks. Officials said at the time that either the Golar Tundra or another tanker would load the first LNG cargo from the facility.

Fusco said the first cargo from Corpus Christi would likely go to the Far East, given current netback opportunities.

However, it could be more economically advantageous to send spot cargoes to Europe at the moment,On Thursday, Platts assessed the US Gulf Coast netback to Japan/Korea at $6.469/MMBtu (based Corpus Christi is the third major export facility in the US producing LNG from shale gas to enter service. Cheniere 's Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana was the first, in 2016, followed by Dominion Energy 's Cove Point terminal in Maryland in March of this year.
