US Strategic Crude-Oil Reserves Falls to 38-Year Low
The weekly EIA report shows the Administration sold another 3.6 million barrels of crude-oil to the private sector last week from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve, bringing the total strategic reserves down to just over 396 million barrels. That's the lowest since April 1984 and nearly 200 million barrels below the 594 million barrels of SPR reserves at the start of 2022. Washington says the sales are necessary to stabilize oil markets and keep gas prices at the pump from climbing too high, although critics argue there are better ways to bring down gas prices, and say the SPR should typically only be used in emergencies in which domestic shortages are a risk.
