Petronas's Recovery Continues as Second-Quarter Earnings Rise
Petroliam Nasional Bhd. posted net profit of 9.6 billion ringgit ($2.29 billion) in the second quarter align="justify"> Friday's result marked the Malaysian state-owned oil company's second consecutive quarter of profit after a year of losses in 2020, when oil prices plunged as the Covid-19 pandemic cut business activity around the world.
Petronas, as the company is best known, posted a net loss of MYR21.0 billion in the second quarter of 2020 and a profit MYR9.3 billion in the first quarter of this year.
Revenue rose 68% to MYR57.1 billion in the second quarter, driven by favorable oil prices for major products and higher sales volume for liquefied natural gas and petroleum products.
Despite the strong results, the company on Friday cautioned that an anticipated rise in oil supply and fresh lockdowns triggered by the emergence of Covid-19 variants could hurt the price and demand recovery for oil.
