Pioneer Natural Resources Swung to Profit in 2Q
Pioneer Natural Resources Co. said Monday it recorded a profit in the second quarter, after posting a loss a year earlier, as global economic growth boosted demand for oil.
The Dallas-based oil exploration and production company posted net income attributable to shareholders of $380 million in the quarter, compared with a loss of $449 million in the same period a year earlier. Earnings per diluted share reached $1.54, from a loss per share of $2.73 in the second quarter of last year, and the company reported adjusted earnings per share of $2.55. Revenue jumped to $3.42 billion from $839 million in the second quarter of 2020.
Pioneer said the average realized price for oil during the second quarter was $64.55 per barrel, up from $23.16 a year earlier, while the average realized price for natural-gas liquids rose to $27.95 per barrel from $12.65 a year earlier and for gas the price rose to $2.69 per thousand cubic feet from $1.15.
The company also announced it would pay a dividend of $1.51 per share, or a total of about $370 million. Pioneer said the rebound in oil demand has pushed commodity prices higher, strengthening the company's balance sheet and allowing it to return capital to its shareholders.
