Repsol Seeks EU Funding for Hydrogen Project
Spanish energy company Repsol SA applied for an undisclosed amount of funding under the European Union's Green Deal to develop a 100 megawatt electrolyzer to make hydrogen, tapping into Europe's aim to boost hydrogen production to meet its 2050 net-zero ambition.
Madrid-based Repsol said Wednesday that it made the application as part of a coalition of fifteen partners to build the electrolyzer that would be connected to a Repsol industrial site. Electrolyzers use electricity to split water into oxygen and hydrogen, which generates energy when consumed in a fuel cell.
The project will involve three years of research, development and construction, Repsol said, plus two years of demonstration and validation.
Hydrogen power made from renewable energy could deliver substantial emission reductions for the EU, but costs are currently too high to compete with cheaper fossil fuels. Repsol said the project could lower costs to close to 3 euros ($3.64) per kilogram of hydrogen.
