DJ Oil Rises After U.S. Inventories Decline
Oil prices settled higher Thursday as traders weighed declining U.S. stockpiles against higher production around the world.
Light, sweet crude for January delivery settled up 2.8% at $52.58 a barrel Brent, the global benchmark, gained 2.2% to $61.45.
Oil prices got a boost from expectations that Saudi Arabia will cut exports to the U.S. in an attempt to curb growing crude supplies, according to Jim Ritterbusch, president of Ritterbusch & Associates. The Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday that crude stocks fell by 1.2 million barrels in the week ended Dec. 7, less than the average expectation of a 2.8 million barrel fall, according to a survey of analysts and traders by The Wall Street Journal.
