Xcel reaffirms commitment to renewables, deep CO2 cuts
Xcel Energy and its US Midwest and Southwest utilities have committed themselves to reducing CO2 emission by 80% by 2030 in the eight states they serve and by 100% by 2050, as investments in renewables to replace legacy coal generation are ramped up.
"We are accelerating our carbon reduction goals because we're encouraged by advances in technology, motivated by customers who are asking for it and committed to working with partners to make it happen," Ben Fowke, chairman, president and CEO of Xcel Energy, said in a Tuesday statement.
The Minneapolis-based holding company said it has already reduced CO2 emissions by 35% since 2005, as part of a previous goal to cut carbon 60% by 2030.
