GoodFuels, Norden trial world's first biofuel 'drop in' ahead of IMO 2020 rule

Netherlands-based GoodFuels Marine, a supplier of sustainable low carbon marine fuels, said Friday it had collaborated with Norden to complete trials of the world's first zero emission, 'drop in' heavy fuel oil-equivalent marine biofuel.

"The successful operation effectively means that there is the capability to future-proof fuel requirements for shipowners and operators who are seeking an alternative to both distillates and ultra low sulfur fuel oil" in order to comply with upcoming sulfur and greenhouse gas emissions rules in international shipping, GoodFuels said in a statement.

The International Maritime Organization will cap global sulfur content in marine fuels at 0.5% starting January 1, 2020, from 3.5% currently. This applies outside the designated emission control areas where the limit is already 0.1%.

In April, a key committee of the IMO agreed to an initial strategy of cutting the shipping industry's total GHG emissions by at least 50% from 2008 levels by 2050. In addition, the IMO has also set a goal of improving the shipping sector's efficiency by at least 40% by 2030 and by 70% by 2050.

The trials came after research and development work with partners including Royal Dutch Boskalis and technology group Wartsila, it said, adding that its BFO usage does not require any engine modifications "We want to scale supply as fast as we can in order to actively contribute to the world's 1.5 degree challenge," GoodFuels CEO Dirk Kronemeijer said.

Meanwhile, Norden CEO Jan Rindbo said that Norden has increased its fuel efficiency and had reduced CO2 emissions per ton cargo transported "Now that we have proven CO2 neutral transport as a viable alternative, I am convinced many carbon-conscious customers will demand this type of transport within a foreseeable future," he said.

Norden and GoodFuels Marine will continue working with each other to gain more experience and scale usage of the fuel as an alternative to HFO, GoodFuels said.

In 2016, GoodFuels founded "The GoodShipping Program" to further engage cargo owners in the challenge of combating shipping's carbon emissions.

In September, it announced that five shippers had completely offset the carbon emissions of their cargo by refueling a vessel with marine biofuels.
