UK producer Serica Energy has agreed to buy the small stakes held by Japan's Marubeni in the Bruce and Keith oil and gas fields in the North Sea as it aims to extend the operating life of the assets.
The deal announced Tuesday adds to those Serica has agreed with BP, Total and BHP Billiton that will see Serica increase its stakes in Bruce and Keith to 98% and 100%, respectively.
BP and Total will each retain a 1% stake in Bruce.
"We are targeting completion of the transactions with BP, Total, BHP and Marubeni "With our consolidated ownership of the three fields, and as operator, we will be in a strong position to deliver enhanced returns from these assets and extend their operating lives," Flegg said.
Under the deal with Marubeni, Serica will acquire the Japanese company's 3.75% interest in the Bruce field and the 8.33% interest in the Keith field.
Serica said the deal differed from that with the other companies, in that Serica will acquire the decommissioning obligations of Marubeni, but will receive in turn a cash consideration from Marubeni, reflecting in part the small interest in Bruce being acquired.
Serica is also buying BP's 50% stake in the interconnected Rhum gas field, with the target completion date of November 30.
